How do cavities develop?
Streptococcus mutans bacteria, which produce acids as part of their metabolism, are responsible for the development of cavities. These acids damage the enamel and in an early stage, they sometimes have a chalky-white appearance or look like a brownish stain on the tooth. At this time, a “repair” is still possible if further damaging influences are prevented. However, if no countermeasures are taken and the damage to the enamel persists, cavities will develop. This dental disease affects both milk and permanent teeth and in the worst-case scenario, it can lead to the loss of the affected tooth.
Cavities bacteria reproduce especially when there is sugar in a favorable environment, i.e. on plaque. Very sugary beverages, juices, sweets as well as sweet dishes are obvious sources that contribute to the development of cavities. But hidden sugar found in products like mustard, ketchup and ready to eat meals can facilitate the development process. Even foods considered to be healthy such as honey and fruit are included in this.
How do we protect children from cavities?
Basically, cavities in children are treated similarly to those in adults. If the enamel surface is only slightly damaged, treatment with a highly concentrated fluoride varnish is often enough, as this will make teeth more resistant to the damaging acids.
Larger damages often have to be treated with a drill so we can remove the cavity on your child’s tooth. The hole created by the drill is then closed with a filling. If the dental nerve is infected, a root canal treatment should be taken into consideration.
If the deterioration of the teeth is already advanced, special milk teeth crowns can be an option. These crowns are placed above the affected tooth. In some cases, this can also be an alternative if your child rejects the treatment due to fear or unwillingness.
