How you can prepare your child to the visit to the dentist

We organize the dental treatment in the most empathetic way – and you can also help to make sure that your children’s visit to the dentist will be a positive experience.

  • In general terms, tell your child about your own positive experiences with the dentist. Leave the detailed information to us. We will use child-friendly words and will consciously avoid terms like “drill” or “syringe” that may instill fear in your children.
  • Don’t forget to bring your child’s favorite stuffed animal or toy.
  • Allow your child to calmly explore our dental office in their own way.

After treatment

  • Praise your child extensively for their courage and perseverance so even unpleasant situations can be positively regarded in retrospect.
  • Together with your child, remember the exciting and funny moments you had while visiting our dental office.
  • Remember what worked well and jointly look for a reason together to look forward to the next visit to our dental office.

Tips for the child’s tooth emergency

Children are full of energy and often have difficulty assessing risky situations correctly. Unfortunately, time and again this leads to accidents in which teeth are also injured. Statistics show that every third to fourth child has had a tooth accident by the age of 16, often at home, in sports, or in the playground.

The good news is that taking simple precautionary measures can reduce the risk of accidents. Sometimes, it is enough to mention the possible dangers to your child and practice the right behavior. Also, make sure that your child is wearing the right protective clothing during sports activities.

On a side note: Children who love to move are less likely to have an injury! And when an accident does happen, you can minimize the consequences by acting in the right way. For example, the remaining teeth can be saved in most cases!

How should you proceed?

  1. Remain calm and act carefully.

  2. In severe bleeding, your child should bite on a piece of bandage or cloth handkerchief and cool off from the outside.

  3. Depending on the type of tooth injury:
If the tooth is very loose or displaced, please don’t manipulate the tooth. Only carefully bite together.

If the tooth has broken off or is knocked out: In any case, look for the tooth and only touch the dental crown, but not the dental root. Never clean the tooth, even if it is dirty! Store the tooth as quickly as possible (within 20 minutes!) moist, ideally in a special rescue box (SOS tooth rescue box or Dentosafe, available in pharmacies).

The tissue in the dental root should not dry out: Alternately, you can mix the tooth in refrigerated, low-fat sterile milk (“H-Milch”) or in an isotonic table salt solution (don’t mix it yourself, available at a medical office or in the pharmacy) and store it there for a short time, although in this case the healing chances are low.

  4. Go to a dental office or clinic
Go to a dentist or dental clinic as quickly as possible: The faster the tooth is reinserted, the greater the chance that it will grow again!

If a milk tooth has been knocked off, it is not inserted back in the tooth space because it can damage the permanent tooth lying underneath. Please consult your dentist in case of a trauma in the milk dentition.
