Infected or diseased dental nerves can cause strong symptoms. For this reason, we act quickly to treat them – so your child can get better soon!
When the dental nerve (also named pulp) is infected, a root canal treatment is necessary. The causes for such an infection can be varied, but a deep dental cavity is usually the main reason. Previous dental treatments, tooth cracks (fractures), or deep gingival pockets can be triggers.
An inflammation of the dental root is often accompanied by intensive pain and sensitivity to heat, cold or touching.
When dental nerves are treated in children, two methods can be chosen depending on the specific situation:
Pulpotomy is a minimally invasive intervention that we use at our DentiMeer pediatric dental office in Wiesbaden to preserve the diseased nerve of a milk tooth. Only the upper part of the nerve (crown nerve) is removed, preserving the remainder of the nerve (root nerve) and the tooth. This allows your child to keep using their teeth without pain until the permanent teeth break through. We use this intervention most often in milk teeth and permanent teeth that have not completed their growth. After a pulpotomy, the affected milk tooth is often stabilized with a pediatric crown.
On the other hand, pulpectomy is a procedure in which the entire nerve of a milk tooth is removed – mostly in the second milk molar. A nerve extraction is generally indicated due to a deeper infection or inflammation and is necessary to relieve pain and prevent the infection from spreading. The affected tooth is often also stabilized with a pediatric crown after a pulpectomy.
Our empathetic pediatric dentist will gladly assist you in order to discuss the best treatment option for your child.
The dental nerve is inside your tooth. If it gets infected by a cavity, for example, you may experience pain and your tooth will become very sensitive. It is then important that you make an appointment with your parents to come to DentiMeer in Wiesbaden. During the appointment, we will remove the infection from inside your tooth so you don’t lose it and the pain will go away. After coming to DentiMeer, you will be fit like a sailor and can travel once again.
